The Tres Cantos City Council has completed a significant tree planting campaign that has transformed its streets and parks since November 2025, incorporating nearly 3,000 new trees and over 20,000 shrubs throughout the municipality.
The initiative, set to conclude by the end of April, aims not only to replace specimens lost annually but also to expand and enhance the city's green infrastructure with species adapted to the local climate. Prior to planting, municipal services conducted a thorough analysis of each area's needs, from street tree alignments to park conditions, to determine the most urgent interventions and the most suitable vegetation.
The most notable intervention in this campaign is the Paraninfo Park project, which will become Tres Cantos' new green lung. In this space alone, approximately 2,000 trees and over 20,000 shrubs will be planted, underscoring the scale of the transformation. The Public Services councilor, Pedro Fernández, stated that residents will be able to fully enjoy this area during the last quarter of the year, once the vegetation has established itself.
“
"Each year we are planting fewer replacement trees and more in new developments."
Beyond Paraninfo Park, the campaign has extended to various parts of Tres Cantos. The Parque Norte Sports Complex has gained over 70 new trees, and an additional 400 trees along with 2,000 shrubs have been planted in other neighborhoods and areas of the municipality. Streets such as Almazara, Tagarral, Almenara, and Pico del Indio, as well as the northern area and Avenida de la Industria, have seen significant improvements in their tree cover.
Parque Central has also received special attention, with efforts focused on reinforcing slopes and landscaped areas by incorporating drought-resistant shrub species. This selection of species, based on sustainability and climate adaptation criteria, is a growing priority for the City Council. Councilor Fernández highlighted that this strategy contributes to increasing oxygen levels and expanding shaded areas, especially valued during the summer months.

"Urban trees represent a fundamental and unique value, requiring proper management based on their cataloging, preservation, and, when necessary, renewal, with the aim of protecting and also improving the landscape of the entire city."
The mayor of Tres Cantos, Jesús Moreno, emphasized the importance of caring for urban trees, stressing that proper management is crucial for protecting and enhancing the city's landscape. This long-term vision aims to build a greener, cooler, and more pleasant city for its inhabitants, prioritizing sustainability and the creation of an efficient urban ecosystem resilient to current climatic conditions.
