The Venezuelan opposition leader was enthusiastically received by a crowd in central Madrid, where shouts of «¡presidenta!» (president!) and «¡libertad!» (freedom!) were heard. The event took place after the leader received the Gold Medal from the regional Government.
From the balcony of the Community of Madrid Presidency headquarters, the leader addressed the attendees, expressing her gratitude and promising to return to Venezuela with the energy received. She also mentioned her intention to present the Caracas city medal to the Madrid president in the near future.
“"With all this energy I am feeling from you, we are going to return to Venezuela."
The Madrid president, visibly moved, defended that Madrid is «the home of freedom» and a bastion for raising a voice for freedom in Venezuela and Cuba. Madrid is the European city with the largest presence of Venezuelan citizens.
In the previous institutional act, held at the Real Casa de Correos, the regional president called for «fighting every day for truth and freedom». During the ceremony, the International Medal was also awarded to Venezuela's president-elect, which was collected by his daughter due to health issues.
“"For me, it is an immense honor, on behalf of all Venezuelans, to receive this Gold Medal from the Community of Madrid, a recognition of each of the citizens of my country, inside and outside Venezuela, who have risked their lives for freedom."
The opposition leader affirmed that «Venezuela will be free» and that the Venezuelans who attended the event would return to build a nation that would never allow the return of tyranny. During her visit to Spain, the leader held meetings with several political leaders, although she declined to meet with the Government president.
