The Cercanías Madrid network is consolidating its position as an essential pillar for mobility in the Community of Madrid, connecting the capital with its municipalities and facilitating access to new urban developments, with 205 million users in 2022.

With 9 main lines, 96 stations, and over 400 kilometers of track, the Cercanías Madrid network is the most extensive in Spain by passenger volume, recording 205 million users in 2022. This system is crucial for residents of metropolitan municipalities such as Alcalá de Henares, Móstoles, Tres Cantos, or Arganda, who use it daily to commute to the capital.
The railway infrastructure also plays a strategic role in the region's urban planning. Many new residential developments, such as Los Berrocales, Los Ahijones, El Cañaveral, and the municipalities included in the Plan Vive, are designed for inhabitants who will combine life on the periphery with work in Madrid capital, relying on the efficiency of Cercanías.
The Ministry of Transport is investing in improving the fleet and infrastructure, with the progressive introduction of new 447 series trains. These trains offer greater capacity, more doors, and increased frequency, responding to growing demand on the busiest lines.
Among the most notable lines is the C-9, connecting Cercedilla and Cotos. This mountain line, which celebrated its centenary in 2023, is recognized for its technical uniqueness and is undergoing a profound renovation. Furthermore, the network promotes cultural tourism, as demonstrated by the tourist train to Alcalá de Henares, inaugurated in January 2024 in collaboration with the university city's City Council.
The Cercanías station at Terminal 4 of Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, operational since September 2011, is a vital connectivity hub, allowing access to the airport from numerous points in the Community in less than 30 minutes. The Personal Transport Pass of the Community of Madrid integrates the use of Metro, EMT buses, and Cercanías, facilitating intermodal mobility.
Train frequencies vary, with services every 10-15 minutes during peak hours and on high-demand lines. On weekdays, Cercanías Madrid operates approximately 1,385 daily services. Users can check schedules and service status in real-time via the official Renfe app, the Cercanías portal, Google Maps, and station information screens.
