The City Council of Leganés has prepared an extensive program of activities to be held until the end of November to commemorate the International Day of Older Persons, celebrated on October 1st.

The program, organized by the Department of Seniors in collaboration with other municipal areas and local entities, aims to pay tribute to the city's older residents. It includes a variety of sports, cultural, leisure, musical, and dance activities, as well as workshops on accident prevention and cybersecurity, and intergenerational initiatives.
The Councilor for Seniors, Virginia Benito, highlighted the enthusiasm put into this initiative, calling it a "tribute to our elders, to a generation that has worked and contributed to building the city we have today and continues to offer its experience, energy, and example every day."
Leganés, with a population of nearly 196,000 people and an aging index of 22.69%, is promoting these actions to enhance the well-being and full integration of its senior citizens.
The institutional opening ceremony will take place on Thursday, October 1st, at 5:30 PM, at the Teatro del Centro Cívico Rigoberta Menchú. It will feature performances by the Choir and Dance Group of the Casa de Extremadura. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and can be requested at the Management Boards of the Municipal Senior Centers.
Throughout October and November, various activities will take place. On October 6th, an Intergenerational Zumba session at the Universidad Carlos III; on October 7th, a Line Dancing Workshop at the Casa de Extremadura; on October 15th, a visit to the urban gardens in Parque de la Hispanidad; and on October 17th, a flamenco performance organized by the Peña Flamenca Trabenco.
On October 20th, the Centro Rosa Luxemburgo will screen a documentary about older women in Leganés, followed by a discussion. Additionally, workshops on accident prevention (October 27th at the Centro Municipal de Mayores Miguel de Cervantes) and cybersecurity (October 29th at the Centro Municipal de Mayores El Carrascal) will be offered.
November will bring more events, including a Bingo with a tasting of Cordoban "gachas" on November 8th at the Casa de Andalucía. On November 13th, there will be an information booth on oral health and a historical route titled "Leganés, city of health," starting from the Hospital Universitario Severo Ochoa.
Other activities include an Open Day for Older Persons at the Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carrascal on November 19th, showcasing various cultural activities. The program will conclude on November 26th with the concert "Las más grandes de España" at the Teatro del Centro Cívico Rigoberta Menchú, and a poetry recital on November 27th at the Casa de Castilla-La Mancha.
Through this initiative, the City Council of Leganés aims to recognize the life journeys of its senior residents and highlight their active role in society, reinforcing its commitment to an inclusive city.
