Urban regeneration works on Doctor Barraquer street, located in the Juan de la Cierva neighborhood, have commenced and are expected to last approximately two months. These works follow previous sanitation and electrical network upgrades carried out during the summer.
The intervention aims to create a unified platform to facilitate pedestrian mobility and improve accessibility, reorganizing the space to offer more usable area for residents. New green spaces, trees, rest areas, and a drinking water fountain will be incorporated.
The project focuses on the section between Cataluña street and Avenida de España, with the goal of improving pedestrian routes, creating new resting areas, and increasing vegetation to provide shade and reduce temperatures. Pavements, lighting, and street furniture will also be renewed.
The project's development involved collaboration with the Eduardo Torroja Institute of the CSIC for material selection. The initiative is part of the Next Generation EU funds and the Spanish Government's Recovery and Transformation Plan, within the framework of Programmed Rehabilitation Residential Environments (ERRP).
This project is part of Getafe's municipal urban regeneration policy, aimed at improving the city's older neighborhoods and preparing them for the challenges of climate change. The departments of Urban Planning, Maintenance, and EMSV are working in coordination to integrate climate adaptation criteria into municipal actions.
The EPIU Getafe Healthy Homes methodology, implemented in the city, serves as a reference for incorporating a comprehensive view of the social, environmental, and urban conditions of neighborhoods into these interventions.
