Although the contract for the new double-decker trains was awarded five years ago, their effective deployment depends on a deep transformation of the network. The length of the new vehicles, reaching 200 meters, requires the expansion of current platforms, which are approximately 150 meters long.
The Ministry of Transport has designed a modernization plan with an investment exceeding 1.3 billion euros. The works include the installation of the ERTMS signaling system, track equipment renewal, and a comprehensive technological upgrade of the line.
The official schedule places the bulk of the construction between 2026 and 2030. Following this period, technical tests will be conducted to ensure the proper functioning of the new operating model, with the process concluding in 2031.
The C-5 is one of the busiest routes in the entire network, serving municipalities such as Móstoles, Leganés, Fuenlabrada, and Humanes. The introduction of these trains aims to alleviate congestion on a line that connects the southern area with the center of Madrid.
