The Community of Madrid will soon tender a new contract to replace two fundamental components for the optimal functioning of the cooling systems: the condensing units, responsible for releasing heat extracted from the train to the outside, and the evaporators, which absorb heat from the interior to cool the environment.
The prototypes, featuring Spanish technology, are already designed and will be manufactured specifically for these trains, taking into account their characteristics and age. Vehicle air conditioning is essential for providing an optimal travel experience, especially during peak demand hours or demanding weather conditions.
Metro allocates nearly €3.5 million to the maintenance of the cooling systems for trains on lines 1 and 5 through a four-year contract, which includes preventive tasks and repairs of components worn by use.
These works will be carried out while the 40 narrow-gauge trains acquired to renew the Line 1 fleet arrive, representing an investment of over €500 million. Line 1, inaugurated in 1919, is the oldest in the Madrid subway system and was the most used on the network in 2025, with over 112 million passengers.
