This initiative is part of the institution's work with free software, following the example of its intranet and website, whose source codes are also available. Open-source technology, based on GPL licenses, allows for the free distribution, modification, and use of software, provided that users allow the reuse of their modifications.
The GdCA document manager was developed using DRUPAL, a free software that Casa de América now offers to other cultural centers or users interested in creating their own documentary archives. The institution aims to provide a valuable tool for entities in the Spanish-speaking world that lack the resources to develop their own solutions.
Through this project, Casa de América contributes its experience accumulated over more than 20 years, which has been particularly valuable in defining the characteristics of a multimedia content manager. Soon, via GdCA, audiovisual archives will be accessible online, including Mario Vargas Llosa's first speech after winning the Nobel Prize, poems by Mario Benedetti, Pablo Fajardo's account of the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest's destruction, speeches by Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Laura Chinchilla, or Michelle Bachelet during their visits to Spain, and songs by Jorge Drexler, Enrique Morente, and Chucho Valdés.
The DRUPAL technology is already used internationally by entities such as the United Nations, the White House, The Economist, Greenpeace, Reuters, Harvard University, Yahoo, and the Louvre Museum. The project was carried out with the services of innovative companies: Dabne, Laloved, Creadtibe, and Ecija Legal & Compliance.
