The Sala Negra at Teatros del Canal hosts the absolute premiere of Sacresize this Thursday, the new creation by choreographer and stage designer Alberto Velasco. The work is presented as a bold reimagining of Igor Stravinsky's renowned score, The Rite of Spring, adapted for non-normative bodies.
The production, which can be seen in the Sala Negra until June 7, is structured as a double dance program. The first act, titled 'Size', integrates dance, original music, and audiovisual creation by Afioco Gnecco, while the second act, 'Sacre', focuses on Stravinsky's iconic score.
Velasco describes the piece as a "choreographic device for fat bodies" that challenges the traditional aesthetic canons of classical and contemporary ballet. The aim is to question established norms through the physical representation of movement in dance, promoting a more inclusive and diverse vision.
“"Celebrating my body in a street festival with other large, enormous, robust, wide, expanded, soft bodies. Beautiful."
The choreographer, who also performs in the piece, shares the stage with Esperanza Guardado, Juanki Fernández, Carlota Ferrer, Jack Gómez, Fiona Orioli, Lucía Palacios, and Vicki Schmidt. The project stems, according to Velasco, from the confluence of two desires: to create "a ballet of fat people" and to choreograph Stravinsky's masterpiece, seeking to "re-code the signs of classical and contemporary ballet".
This initiative highlights Teatros del Canal's commitment to inclusion and bodily diversity in contemporary dance. The production challenges historical ballet conventions, opening spaces for artistic expression from perspectives often marginalized in the performing arts.
