The regional government has made a critical appeal to citizens to come forward and donate blood. The drastic reduction in reserves, now at 46% of their optimal level, has led to the activation of a red alert for blood types 0+, 0-, A+, A-, B- and AB-. This situation demands an immediate response to ensure the necessary supply in the region's hospitals.
Currently, the available stock stands at 2,276 bags, significantly below the 5,000 bags considered optimal to guarantee healthcare coverage. The Community of Madrid requires approximately 900 daily donations to sustain all hospital activity, a need that has not been adequately met since the holiday period.
“"Donating blood is donating life, in a context where hospitals continue to need a constant supply to attend to emergencies, surgical interventions, and treatments that require transfusions."
Blood is a vital and irreplaceable resource for numerous patients, and its shelf life necessitates constant maintenance of reserves. The regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has appealed to the solidarity of Madrid residents, emphasizing the importance of this altruistic gesture for public health.
To facilitate donations, the Community of Madrid has set up various points. In addition to the regional Transfusion Center in Valdebernardo, there are 30 hospitals and mobile units from the Community and Cruz Roja, including the Cruz Roja room at Juan Montalvo Street, 3, in the capital. The donation process is quick, lasting only about 20 minutes, and requirements include being between 18 and 65 years old, weighing over 50 kilograms, and being in good health. Detailed schedules and addresses are available on the Community of Madrid website.
