Travelers on the Madrid Metro will no longer need the Public Transport Card (TTP) to purchase a single ticket. From Monday, June 1st, they can pay directly at the entrance turnstiles using their bank card or mobile devices with contactless technology. During the initial weeks, the single ticket will have a promotional price of 1.5 euros.
This new system, known as "tap to pay", will be available in all 303 stations of the network. The aim is to facilitate access, especially for occasional travelers, tourists, or those who do not have a recharged transport pass at the moment. The initiative seeks to adapt to users' digital habits and streamline flow during peak times.
The presentation of this new feature took place at the Feria de Madrid station, on Line 8, where preliminary tests were conducted. The Minister of Housing, Transport, and Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, stated that the model aims to offer "the fastest and most accessible ways" to use public transport, highlighting its usefulness for high-attendance events like the papal visit or the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
The total investment to implement this system across 1,249 turnstiles throughout the network has exceeded 6.6 million euros. In stations with older equipment, at least two turnstiles will be enabled for this type of validation, which will also include QR code reading.
It is estimated that around 210,000 users purchase single tickets daily, making this group one of the main beneficiaries. The system will remain compatible with existing transport passes and is part of the modernization strategy for Madrid's public transport.
Representatives from the financial sector, such as Mastercard, have praised the international experience of this payment model, already implemented in cities like London, New York, or Sydney, emphasizing improvements in efficiency and the city's competitiveness as a tourist destination.
