The Madrid City Council, led by José Luis Martínez-Almeida, will present the city's Golden Key to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado on Friday, April 17, at Casa de la Villa, an honor previously bestowed upon two other Venezuelan opposition politicians.

The ceremony is scheduled for 6:00 PM, as announced by Martínez-Almeida himself. This gesture aims to acknowledge Machado's efforts on behalf of Venezuelans, particularly those residing in Madrid, and to reaffirm the city's commitment to democracy and human rights.

"We will receive María Corina Machado at Casa de la Villa with all honors and present her with the Keys to the city of Madrid. We understand that María Corina Machado's figure transcends Venezuela to become a global defender of democracy and human rights."

Traditionally, the Golden Key is awarded to heads of State during official visits. However, during Almeida's term, this distinction has been used to honor Venezuelan opposition leaders. In addition to Machado, the city previously granted it to Juan Guaidó in 2020 and Edmundo González in 2025.
The mayor defended the decision, noting that municipal regulations do not specify who cannot receive the key, and that Machado's stature merits this recognition. This will be the eighth Golden Key awarded during Almeida's administration, who granted five such distinctions in his first term.
Among the recipients of this honor under his mandate are the former president of South Korea, Gustavo Petro, the president of Italy Mattarella, and two absolute monarchs: the emir of Qatar and the sultan of Oman. In 2022, the City Council Plenary voted to revoke the Golden Key from Vladimir Putin, who had received it in 2006.
