The Madrid City Council, led by Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, will present the Golden Key of the City to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado next Friday, April 17 at 6:00 PM at Casa de la Villa, in an event recognizing her commitment to democracy and human rights.

Mayor Martínez-Almeida announced this recognition, highlighting Machado's trajectory as a "universal symbol" for her dedication to human rights and democracy, even at personal risk. The decision was made public after the presentation of the 48th edition of the Zurich Rock 'n' Roll Running Series Madrid.
The Madrid city government has coordinated the institutional reception with Machado's team, through opposition figure Antonio Ledesma, to ensure an event befitting the distinction's importance. This gesture, according to Almeida, honors Machado's efforts on behalf of Venezuelans, especially those residing in Madrid.

"We will receive María Corina Machado at Casa de la Villa with all honors and present her with the Keys to the city of Madrid."

José Luis Martínez-Almeida · Mayor of Madrid
Martínez-Almeida defended the award, stating that Madrid is a city "committed to democracy and human rights." He recalled precedents for granting the Keys of Madrid to relevant personalities who were not heads of state, such as Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan in 2008 or then-Prince Charles of England in 2011, both during Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón's tenure.
The municipal regulations allow for the presentation to heads of state on official visits but do not explicitly prohibit its granting to other figures. The mayor emphasized that María Corina Machado's stature "transcends Venezuela to become a global defender of democracy and human rights," deeming her fully deserving of this honor.
