Madrid is preparing for an astronomical phenomenon not seen in over a century: a solar eclipse. The Community of Madrid has announced a comprehensive plan for residents to enjoy this event, which, according to the regional government, has not been visible in the Iberian Peninsula since 1905. The eclipse will be observable from 93 municipalities in the northern and eastern parts of the region, starting at 7:30 PM and reaching its peak around 8:32 PM, coinciding with sunset.
Buitrago del Lozoya will be the epicenter of the celebration with the 'Eclipse Festival,' organized by the City Council in collaboration with the Community of Madrid. The event, held at the Riosequillo Pools Recreational Area, will feature food trucks, live music, children's games, workshops, and scientific and cultural activities. Entry is free but requires advance reservation due to a capacity limit of 3,000 people. Registrations open tomorrow at 10:00 AM. Visitors can also view the 'Trío de Eclipses' exhibition.
For those who prefer to observe the eclipse from other locations, the regional government will distribute 36,500 certified glasses with informative QR codes, adding to the 20,000 already handed out. Informative leaflets with safety recommendations to prevent eye damage from direct sun exposure will also be distributed.
The Madrid 112 Security Agency (ASEM 112) has activated a security plan that includes the Territorial Civil Protection Plan in operational situation 0, reinforced 112 and Firefighter personnel, and communication guarantees. Given the coincidence with a high-risk period for high temperatures, residents are urged to take extreme precautions against fires.
The Regional Transport Consortium (CRTM) will strengthen several bus lines to facilitate access to observation points. Notable lines include 191 (Madrid-Buitrago del Lozoya) and 193 (towards Pedrezuela and Venturada) from Plaza de Castilla, as well as lines 725, 726, 691, 223, and 222. Specific personnel will be available at high-demand points for traveler guidance.
It is recommended to plan trips in advance, preferably use public transport, avoid parking or driving outside designated areas, and follow authorities' instructions.
