The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued an orange alert, indicating significant risk, for the entire metropolitan area of Madrid. Temperatures are expected to reach 39ºC from 1:00 PM onwards today, prompting municipal and health authorities to elevate the alert level.
In response to these severe weather forecasts and the consequent risk to public health, the Madrid City Council has confirmed the continuation of the Heatwave Action Plan (CALORMAD) in its Emergency phase.
Municipal and emergency services emphasize the importance of following strict guidelines to prevent heatstroke and severe dehydration. Recommendations include avoiding direct sun exposure, especially between 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM, and limiting outdoor physical activities to cooler hours.
Continuous hydration is crucial, advising to drink plenty of water and cool liquids regularly, while avoiding alcoholic or overly sugary beverages. Special attention is also urged for the elderly, chronically ill, young children, and pregnant women, ensuring they remain in cool, hydrated environments.
The plan also warns of symptoms to watch for, such as dizziness, rapid pulse, intense headache, or confusion. If any of these occur, it is vital to seek a cool place immediately and contact emergency services.
