The Community of Madrid has concluded its 2025/26 winter road campaign, increasing monitored road kilometers by 30% and substantially boosting the use of salt and brine to ensure mobility.

The 2025/26 winter road maintenance campaign in the Community of Madrid has concluded after covering surveillance and maintenance tasks on approximately 288,000 kilometers of the regional road network. This operation, active from November 1st to April 30th, represents a 30% increase compared to the previous season.
The regional government reported that the primary objective of this initiative was to ensure safety and traffic flow through preventive and corrective actions against adverse weather conditions. To achieve this, the General Directorate of Roads mobilized 271 specialized professionals and deployed 91 surveillance vehicles, 59 snowplows, three turbo-milling machines, and 16 backhoes.
The infrastructure for the campaign included 43 salt storage points with a capacity for 5,000 tons and eight brine production plants. During the period, 8,570 tons of salt, 6,000 kilograms of calcium chloride, and over 1.1 million liters of brine were spread. These figures represent a 44% increase in salt usage and nearly 80% in brine compared to the previous campaign.
The operation was enhanced with 27 weather stations and 31 surveillance cameras, strategically located in mountain passes, to obtain real-time information on road conditions and improve safety on the more than 2,500 kilometers of regional roads.
The Community of Madrid also implemented pilot projects for technological innovation, such as 20 intelligent sensors on the road surface to monitor temperature and frost risk, and new heated anti-ice vertical signs for better visibility.
The Madrid 112 Security and Emergency Agency activated the Winter Inclement Weather Plan for 29 days. Meanwhile, the State Meteorological Agency issued 49 yellow and three orange alerts in the region, exceeding the previous winter by 19 alerts.
