Following an intense negotiation process with the Directorate General for the Elderly and Dependency of the Community of Madrid, the Getafe council has significantly increased the number of places for the Almendro Day Center. The facility, designed to accommodate 70 users, initially only had a regional offer of 35 places.
The mayor of Getafe, Sara Hernández, highlighted the municipal insistence in reaching this agreement, noting that the Community of Madrid has made no investment in the building's construction or equipment. Despite co-financing, the City Council will cover the remaining costs due to outdated Community agreements.
The future goal is to reach the maximum capacity of 70 places, with an opening planned for the first quarter of 2027. Currently, the center is in the equipment phase, with an investment of 200,000 euros from the municipal budget and European funds for supplies, multisensory rooms, physiotherapy equipment, and advanced physical and cognitive rehabilitation technology.
The center's operation will require a budget of approximately 1,000,000 euros, combining co-financing from both administrations and user co-payments for the dining service. It will have a staff of 30 professionals, including psychologists, physiotherapists, social workers, nursing staff, cultural animators, and drivers for the adapted transport service.
The Almendro Day Center will implement the Person-Centered Integrated Care (PCIC) model, recognizing the dignity and decision-making capacity of the user. This innovative model aligns with the new State Law on Dependency and Disability.
The mayor has urged the Community of Madrid to update its regulations to allow residents from surrounding neighborhoods to use the dining service and other activities, preventing the facility from operating as an isolated entity.
Each user will have a Personal Care and Life Project Plan (PAV), a dynamic tool that will plan support with active participation from the individual and their family, promoting independent living and community integration.
