The initiative, which seeks to renaturalize urban spaces and mitigate the effects of climate change, will be extended in the coming years. The objective is to increase the presence of these spaces to make them accessible throughout the city.
This summer, civic centers such as La Alhóndiga and Las Margaritas, along with the Espacio Joven and the Centro de Día Almendro, served as temporary shelters. Concurrently, permanent shelters are being developed, with some already operational in La Alhóndiga and Las Margaritas, and others in progress in Juan de la Cierva, on Tarragona and Doctor Barraquer streets.
The mayor, Sara Hernández, explained during the State of the City Plenary that the urban planning approach is people-centered and focused on combating climate change. "We are implementing urban planning focused on people that seeks to mitigate climate change problems through the renaturalization of urban space, and in this regard, our commitment as a Municipal Government is to create more and more refuge spaces," she stated.
These improvements are part of the actions by the Urban Planning and Maintenance departments to make Getafe a greener and more sustainable city. Municipal companies LYMA and EMSV are collaborating in the transformation of public spaces, implementing pavements that reduce temperature, planting thousands of trees and shrubs, and equipping children's areas with water jets to alleviate the heat.
