Authorities have confirmed that the execution deadlines are being met satisfactorily, and some phases have even been brought forward. The Madrid City Council has provided additional details regarding bus circulation connecting the southwest of the region with the capital, confirming that they will be able to use the new tunnel.
The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, announced the completion of the excavation of the 3.2-kilometer south tunnel, in the direction of the city entrance. Although its connection with the M-30 is still pending, this infrastructure is expected to be fully operational by the end of this year. This progress will benefit public transport, facilitating smoother circulation for dozens of bus lines.
The works have exceeded 80% of the total excavation, and the north tunnel, in the direction out of Madrid, has reached 70%. Following these phases, the installation of essential structures and systems such as ventilation and emergency exits will begin. Technical tests and the connection with the M-30 will be carried out next summer, with the expectation that the tunnel will become operational before the end of the year.
This news is met with great optimism by residents of Alcorcón and other nearby cities, who have long demanded a direct bus connection to Príncipe Pío. Until now, Cuatro Vientos had functioned as an improvised interchange, so this advance represents a crucial step towards meeting the transport needs of citizens in southern Madrid.
