The structure, now available for public use, consists of 16 large pillars generating 12 shaded zones. The project also included compacting the gravel ground of the Fairgrounds and installing benches under the new canopy. The pergola is equipped with backlit signage.
Roberto Fernández, Councilor for Maintenance, stated that this intervention is part of the Getafe City Council's efforts to adapt public spaces to high temperatures and increase available shaded areas.
This project in El Bercial complements other recent improvements in various parts of Getafe. These include the new children's fountain in San Isidro Park, which required an investment of 285,000 euros and will be furnished with new benches. Shade canopies have also been replaced in parks such as San Isidro, Victoria Kent Square, Los Espartales, and Los Molinos.
The city also boasts other children's fountains on Huelva Street and Cataluña Street, as well as walk-through fountains in San Sebastián Square and Arboleda Street.
As part of this summer's heat mitigation measures, the City Council has designated municipal spaces as climate shelters. The civic centers La Alhóndiga and Las Margaritas offer activities, while the Getafe Joven Space remains open with technological resources. The Department for the Elderly has expanded its July and August programming, providing 455 places.
