The CREAA in Alcorcón has finally found a destination after years of searching for investors. The arrival of Soho City ends the uncertainty for a cultural complex conceived during the real estate boom, which remained unfinished due to the economic crisis, becoming a symbol of stalled major projects in southern Madrid.
Over the years, various municipal governments attempted to utilize the facilities, which included an auditorium, theater, and cultural spaces. One of the initial options was to link it to the Eurovegas project, which aimed to be established in Alcorcón and was seen as an opportunity to unblock the CREAA's future.
Subsequently, university and training proposals emerged, such as a Sports University linked to the Spanish Olympic Committee, as well as cultural and performing arts initiatives. The NBA's interest in developing sports and training facilities was also considered. However, none of these proposals managed to overcome the necessary costs to complete and adapt the complex.
Among the most publicized ideas was the potential installation of a large Buddhist center promoted by those associated with actor Richard Gere. More recently, it was presented as a future audiovisual and technological hub. None of these initiatives materialized, prolonging the sense that any idea was possible for the venue, which even became the subject of jokes and fictional announcements.
Now, the City Council has opted for an integral solution with Soho City, a project that will unify the complex's eight buildings under a single management. After more than a decade of promises, the CREAA faces a new opportunity to shed its status as a symbol of an unfinished project.
