As every April 23 for the past eleven years, the political group Vecinos por Moralzarzal took to the streets to celebrate Book Day with residents. In this 2026 edition, members of the main opposition party distributed more than two hundred literary works of various genres at strategic points in the municipality, with the aim of promoting cultural exchange and the pleasure of reading.
This initiative, which began in 2015 under the impetus of Vecinos, has become a significant date on the local calendar. The municipal group emphasizes that celebrating culture is not an isolated event, but a commitment to the town's identity and the development of free and critical citizens.
“"For us, celebrating culture is not an isolated event; it is a commitment to the identity of our town and to the formation of free and critical citizens."
Vecinos por Moralzarzal has pointed out that support for culture has not always been a priority for all administrations. A contrast has been drawn with the attitude shown by the current mayor, who, in his previous tenure at the head of the Town Hall, had already demonstrated a lack of interest in such neighborhood initiatives, even attempting to make invisible or suppress actions that, like this one, brought books to the streets for free and in a participatory manner.
“"It is regrettable that the mayor continues on the path of contempt for public services."
The party has denounced that this detachment from culture is currently evident in the Cultural Center, where workshops are not functioning and teachers have been suffering from unpaid wages and precarious working conditions for months. In contrast to a Government team that, according to Vecinos, focuses on spending on banquets and land purchases, the group advocates for a municipal model where education and art are priorities.
“"We will continue distributing books, supporting our local artists, and defending transparent management that takes care of its workers and public services. In Moralzarzal, culture does not surrender."
