The University Associated Hospital Guadarrama, a public medium-stay center belonging to the Community of Madrid, has been chosen as a worldwide example of decarbonization by the The World's Greenest Hospital platform. This initiative, managed by the Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare (NCSH), highlights real solutions in energy, waste, and resilience within the healthcare sector.
Until recently, the platform was exclusively for companies and special projects from the European Union. Now, the platform has introduced a new category to showcase hospitals that inspire others with their best practices, with the Madrid-based center being the first hospital to be featured on this global network.
The hospital is participating with its Energy Saving and Decarbonization Plan, an initiative led by Raquel Blasco Moreno, head of the Quality Management System. This plan stands out by simultaneously addressing energy management, identifying the center's energy types and uses to reduce costs and improve efficiency, and people management, focusing on informing, training, and raising awareness among all hospital staff.
This union of technology and education makes the center a pioneering example, and it is also the only hospital in the Community of Madrid to participate in this call. The initiative is based on the clear idea that human health depends on planetary health, thus requiring the healthcare sector to avoid pollution and environmental problems.
The hospital's plan is supported by three pillars: economic, social, and environmental sustainability, ensuring principles of equity and equality. These objectives align with the goals of the Madrid Health Service (SERMAS) and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Sources from the center have stated that appearing on this European platform does not represent a physical award but significant international recognition, demonstrating that the hospital operates effectively and serves as a model for organizations worldwide.
