The San Lorenzo de El Escorial Town Council has launched the first edition of the 'Tree of the Year' contest, an initiative aimed at recognizing and highlighting the most unique trees in the municipality.

This participatory call invites residents to propose trees they consider most representative of the local landscape. Criteria include beauty, history, stature, and connection to the environment and community. Proposals can be submitted until May 27, using the form available on the municipal website, which must include photographs of the proposed tree.
Applications can be submitted in person at the Casa de la Juventud or sent via email. Participants must be of legal age and can submit a maximum of two trees located within the municipal area of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

"With this activity, the Town Council seeks to highlight the extraordinary natural richness of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and underscore the importance of its trees as vital elements of the locality's natural, cultural, and emotional heritage."

The winning tree will be officially recognized as 'Tree of the Year 2026' and will receive a commemorative plaque. Additionally, the person who submits the winning nomination will receive a 150-euro gift voucher, redeemable for plants at a local nursery.
Proponents of the ten most voted trees will receive the book El valor de los árboles (The Value of Trees), published by the Town Council. Once the registration period closes, accepted nominations will be published on municipal social media, where a popular vote will be open for seven natural days.
