The Tres Cantos City Council has launched an awareness campaign to promote respect for parking spaces designated for people with reduced mobility (PMR), highlighting their importance for the autonomy of nearly 2,500 residents.
The initiative, presented on April 29, seeks to eradicate the improper occupation of these spaces, which has increased in recent years. For many residents with disabilities, the availability of these spaces is crucial for carrying out daily activities and maintaining their independence.
“
"Their improper use constitutes a direct barrier to the autonomy, equal opportunities, and daily life of those who need it most. Every improperly occupied PMR space is one more obstacle for those who already face multiple barriers in their daily lives."
The campaign has been promoted by the Department of Family and Equality and is supported by entities such as the Polibea Foundation and the associations ATREMO and AMI3. These organizations, which work directly with people with disabilities in Tres Cantos, have highlighted the need for this awareness.
Although regulations include economic penalties for the improper use of these spaces, the main objective of the campaign is to encourage reflection on civility and respect. The aim is for citizens to understand that respecting these spaces is fundamental to guaranteeing the rights of people with reduced mobility.
“
"Beyond the penalties for not complying with public regulations, it is about reflecting on the importance of civility and respect, valuing the right of all people to move around and, of course, to participate in city life on equal terms."
Currently, nearly 2,500 residents of Tres Cantos have a recognized disability, a figure that has grown by more than 33% in recent years, according to the Diagnosis of the situation of people with disabilities and their environment in Tres Cantos. This increase underscores the urgency of ensuring accessibility in public spaces and removing barriers in streets, public areas, and transport.
