The Tres Cantos City Council has launched a new phase of its canine DNA campaign to remind owners of the obligation to register the approximately 4,000 registered pets, aiming to improve identification and urban cleanliness.

The initiative, under the slogan ‘Their DNA is unique. Their registration, too’, aims to increase the number of animals registered in the municipal genetic census, a measure included in the Municipal Regulatory Ordinance on Animal Ownership.
The canine DNA registration system complements microchip identification by obtaining a unique genetic profile from a saliva sample. This simple and quick procedure helps locate lost pets, identify animals in cases of abandonment or mistreatment, and address uncivil behavior related to picking up excrement on public streets.
Once the process is complete, owners receive an identification tag with a QR code that facilitates the animal's location if lost.
The City Council reminds that registration is mandatory for all dogs residing in Tres Cantos and costs 40 euros. Registration can be done by appointment at authorized veterinary clinics within the municipality. Compliance with this regulation will be monitored by the Local Police.
The City Council has reported that urban cleanliness controls and identification of owners failing to collect their pets' excrement are already underway, leading to fines. The Local Police will continue to verify correct registration in the genetic census, and owners who have not completed the mandatory registration may be penalized.
Residents can find all information regarding canine DNA registration, the steps involved, authorized clinics, and the genetic identification system's conditions through the information channels provided by the City Council.
