Amidst rising temperatures and the approach of the highest risk season, the council has activated a forest fire prevention plan. The municipal ordinance outlines a set of obligations and recommendations for residents and landowners to minimize incident probability and safeguard the natural environment and properties.
The risk calendar, based on the Special Civil Protection Plan for Forest Fire Emergencies of the Community of Madrid, distinguishes two key periods. The medium risk period runs from May 16 to June 14 and from October 1 to October 31, while the high risk period spans from June 15 to September 30. During these times, restrictions and preventive measures are intensified.
Property owners are reminded of the importance of inspecting and clearing vegetation from their plots, including perimeter strips, before the high-risk period begins. Plant debris must be removed to designated collection points or authorized landfills, and accumulation in unauthorized areas is prohibited.
The ordinance prohibits lighting fires in forest areas and within a 400-meter radius. The use of pyrotechnic materials is also restricted, requiring municipal authorization and adherence to specific safety conditions. Furthermore, during medium and high-risk periods, the use of machinery that could generate sparks on non-urban land will require prior authorization and the implementation of preventive measures.
Special emphasis is placed on urban-forest interface zones, recommending the operational readiness of irrigation systems, hydrants, and hoses, as well as maintaining water reserves where possible to facilitate a rapid response in case of a fire.
The City Council warns that non-compliance with these regulations may result in sanctions and endanger collective safety. Citizens are urged to immediately contact 112 or the Local Police of San Sebastián de los Reyes upon noticing any signs of smoke or fire.
