The municipality of San Sebastián de los Reyes celebrates over five centuries of existence, recalling May 2, 1492. On that date, a Royal Decree issued in Medina del Campo by the Catholic Monarchs marked a turning point for residents seeking protection and freedom. This document not only ordered the release of prisoners but also officially named the locality.
To honor this milestone, a calendar of events has been designed, starting on April 23 and concluding on May 2. The aim is for citizens to enjoy the celebration and connect with the roots of their municipality through culture and leisure.
The festivities begin on Thursday, April 23, in the afternoon. At 5:30 PM, the ‘Pepe Machado’ press room will host the presentation of a commemorative deck of cards, designed by Fernando Corella, illustrating the city's foundation. Shortly after, at 6:00 PM, at the library in the Plaza de la Iglesia, the Asociación Pedro Rodríguez ‘el Viejo’ y Francisca ‘la de Bártulo’ will unveil a plaque in honor of the founders, an essential recognition of those who laid the groundwork for today's vibrant city.
One of the main attractions will be the Foundation Market, taking place from April 24 to 26 around the ‘La Tercera’ Bullring. During these three days, the area will transform into a Renaissance market with craft, food, and hospitality stalls. In addition to shopping, the Teatro Musical Sanse association will offer historical performances about the foundation on April 25 and 26, and on Saturday, April 25, at 5:30 PM, a didactic Renaissance concert will be held.
Saturday, April 25, will also offer immersive experiences, such as masterclasses in Renaissance dances in the lobby of the ‘El Caserón’ building (at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM). On the same day, the Ethnographic Museum and 17th-century caves will open their doors, with guided tours at 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Pre-registration is required for both activities.
On May 1, at 12:00 PM, the official 534th Anniversary ceremony and the traditional floral offering to the Catholic Monarchs will take place in the children's park on San Onofre Street, a moment of respect and remembrance for Isabel and Fernando.
The grand finale of the celebrations will be on May 2 at La Marina Park, with the big caldereta (stew) festival. This event, deeply rooted among residents, is a day of massive community gathering. Public access will open at 8:00 AM, and the program will include free popular caldereta distribution at 1:30 PM, contests for migas, calderetas, and pastry, children's activities like bouncy castles and children's bull runs, and musical performances, including Rubén Madrid at 4:30 PM. A transhumance will also take place at 1:00 PM, in collaboration with the Federación de Peñas.
