Universal accessibility works at the Las Berceas pool complex, located in the Valle de la Fuenfría of Cercedilla, have concluded. This area, recognized for its environmental and scenic value within the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, is now a model for mountain inclusion, allowing the enjoyment of natural heritage without barriers.
The exterior intervention has respected the forest topography, introducing continuous pathways and exterior walkways. These paths combine noble wood decking and earthen pavements, framed by wild granite slabs and protected by traditional wooden fencing and corten steel curbs, minimizing visual impact.
To enhance biodiversity, the area has been enriched with topsoil, lawn adaptation, and the planting of 20 new arboreal specimens. The installation of hidden drainage channels ensures proper evacuation of mountain rainwater, maintaining paths accessible for people with reduced mobility year-round.
Internally, the service modules and changing rooms have been remodeled to offer universal spaces. Four large adapted wooden exterior doors have been installed to facilitate access for wheelchairs and strollers.
The wet areas feature technical non-slip vinyl flooring. Plumbing renovation has enabled the creation of two fully adapted sanitary areas, equipped with sinks and toilets, and complemented by four ergonomic grab bars. Simplified signage and information improve cognitive accessibility.
This project aligns with the commitment of the Sierra de Guadarrama Tourist Innovation Center to increase the destination's accessibility. The works have enhanced accessibility levels and improved the experience for visitors and residents.
The intervention at Las Berceas reaffirms the commitment to sustainability and accessibility, demonstrating the feasibility of adapting a top-tier tourist resource in nature while respecting its surroundings.
The project is part of the Sierra de Guadarrama Development Association's (Adesgam) Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan (PSTD-Adesgam), included in the 'Territorial Plan of the Community of Madrid 2021', within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, financed by European Union Funds-Next Generation EU.
