The objective of this initiative, promoted by the Consejería de Vivienda, Transportes e Infraestructuras, is for travelers to more easily identify this stop as the closest to the Getafe Club de Fútbol stadium. The station will also feature special decoration designed by Getafe CF in collaboration with the Federation of Club Fan Groups, including distinctive elements of the team and its fans, such as the lyrics of the 'azulón' anthem on the access stairs.
Furthermore, the Sierra de Guadalupe station, on Line 1, will be renamed Sierra de Guadalupe - Universidad. This change aims to facilitate the location of the stop in relation to the South Campus of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). The modification will take effect in the coming weeks.
These modifications to the signage of the Metro network, trains, and suburban maps will require work that will begin the night before the new names come into effect.
Metro de Madrid has previously made name changes to other stations. For instance, Metropolitano became Vicente Aleixandre to avoid confusion with the stadium of the same name. The former Atocha station was renamed Estación del Arte to highlight its proximity to the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza, and Reina Sofía museums. The most recent change was Atocha Renfe, now simply called Atocha after the railway sector liberalization.
The Los Espartales station, inaugurated in 2003 in Getafe, serves over 1.7 million users annually. Meanwhile, Sierra de Guadalupe, opened in March 1999, registers 6.8 million annual travelers.
