This situation has triggered a red alert for blood groups 0+, 0-, A+, A-, B-, and AB-. The decrease is attributed to the usual summer decline, exacerbated by continuous heatwaves. The current stock is 1,913 units, significantly below the optimal level of 5,000 units, according to regional government data.
To maintain hospital operations and supply the region's 70 hospitals, approximately 900 daily donations are required. Blood is essential for emergencies, ongoing treatments, surgical procedures, transplants, and care for accidents, hemorrhages, or burns. It is an irreplaceable resource that cannot be manufactured.
The region has 30 hospitals with fixed donation points, in addition to mobile units from the Community of Madrid and the Red Cross. The autonomous Transfusion Center in the Valdebernardo neighborhood and the Red Cross facility at Calle Juan Montalvo 3, both in the capital, also accept donations.
