This significant action, approved by the Governing Council, is part of Canal de Isabel II's RED Plan. The primary goal is to optimize the efficiency of the drinking water networks by replacing obsolete pipelines with those made from more advanced and resistant materials, thereby significantly reducing the risk of breakdowns.
The planned works include not only the direct replacement of pipes but also the rehabilitation of conduits using trenchless technologies. The project's division into geographical lots will allow interventions to be carried out simultaneously in various districts of Madrid city.
This initiative will receive financial support from the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), within the framework of the Community of Madrid FEDER Program 2021-2027, providing up to 40% co-financing.
The RED Plan represents one of Canal de Isabel II's largest historical investments, designed to ensure water quality and supply throughout the region, as well as to increase the efficiency of the distribution network. In 2025, 481 kilometers of pipes were renewed, the highest figure since the public company launched this initiative in 2018.
Thanks to these actions, the historical average for renewal has doubled, with 190 kilometers replaced in 2022, 257 in 2023, and 347 in 2024. Last year also set a new annual record, with over 200 executed operations. From the plan's inception in 2018 until the end of 2025, a total of 1,743.5 kilometers of pipes will have been replaced.
