Since Thursday, the Madrid subway system has deployed 40 cooling units strategically placed on the platforms of 20 key stations on lines 1 and 5. This initiative, now in its third consecutive summer, primarily aims to ensure optimal comfort conditions for travelers and personnel during the hottest months of the year.
The measure has been advanced this year in response to weather forecasts predicting an early rise in temperatures. The water-based cooling systems will operate automatically between 11:30 AM and 9:30 PM whenever the outdoor temperature exceeds 30 degrees Celsius or when the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) issues alerts for intense heat episodes.
On line 1, the units have been installed at the Sol, Chamartín, Alvarado, Iglesia, Antón Martín, Estación del Arte, Atocha, Puente de Vallecas, Buenos Aires, and Alto del Arenal stations. Meanwhile, on line 5, they will be operational at Callao, Alonso Martínez, Gran Vía, Chueca, Ópera, Diego de León, Núñez de Balboa, La Latina, Puerta de Toledo, and Acacias stations.
Additionally, Madrid Metro has intensified the maintenance of air conditioning systems across its entire train fleet. The company reiterated that any detected issues with these systems lead to the immediate withdrawal of the affected train for repair, aiming to minimize downtime.
As a complementary measure to preserve the internal temperature of the trains and optimize air conditioning, Metro will keep the automatic door opening feature deactivated during the summer months.
