The total number of people enrolled in the Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO) has reached 76,693, marking 3,795 new registrations compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the region has recorded 99 effective donations, accounting for 28% of the national total.
To join the registry, candidates must be between 18 and 40 years old, weigh over 50 kg, and have a body mass index between 20 and 35 kg. The process begins with a blood draw at the Madrid Transfusion Center to determine the candidate's genetic profile.
Blood stem cell donation is performed in 85% of cases via peripheral route, a procedure similar to a standard blood draw. Only 15% of cases require a surgical procedure under general anesthesia to obtain the tissue from the hip bones.
