A total of fifty-four establishments, including restaurants, taverns, and cafes, have been selected to provide menus with prices ranging from 8 to 85 euros. This initiative aims to facilitate the work of the over 2,000 journalists and reporters who will be accredited to cover the international event of Pope Leo XIV's visit to the Spanish capital, an occasion that will place Madrid at the center of global media attention.
The proposal, a result of collaboration between the Consejería de Presidencia, Justicia y Administración Local, Hostelería Madrid, Restaurantes y Tabernas Centenarios, and the Asociación Madrileña de Empresas de Restauración, has a dual purpose: to streamline the work of accredited professionals and to promote Madrid's rich gastronomy to a global audience.
Journalists will receive a Welcome Pack containing a connectivity card, water bottles, and a QR code. This code will grant access to a web page listing all participating venues and details of the proposed menus.
Most of the establishments are located near the Real Casa de Correos, in the Puerta del Sol, which will host the International Press Center operating 24 hours a day during the papal visit. This center will be the hub for all media activity.
The selected hospitality offerings range from centenary restaurants, such as Restaurante Botín (founded in 1725), Taberna Antonio Sánchez (the city's oldest), Casa Alberto (1827), and Las Cuevas de Luis Candelas (1849), to more recent but established venues like Taberna Corrientes and El Museo del Jamón. Contemporary options from groups like Rosi La Loca World are also included.
Additionally, two points for typical pastries and sweets will be set up at the International Press Center, in collaboration with La Mallorquina and Viena Capellanes, showcasing regional confectionery. Viena Capellanes will offer traditional Madrilenian sweets, and the Asociación de Pasteleros Artesanos de Madrid will collaborate on a commemorative cake for Leo XIV's visit.
This initiative combines logistical support for the press, promotion of local hospitality, and dissemination of regional gastronomy, during an event that will place Madrid at the epicenter of global news coverage for a week.
