The Community of Madrid has greenlit a significant Framework Agreement, earmarking over 1 billion euros for the procurement of medications for public hospitals under the Madrilenian Health Service (SERMAS). This initiative, briefed to the Governing Council, aims to guarantee access to various types of drugs for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of extending it for an additional three years.
The procurement includes high-impact drugs, which are innovative and typically high-priced compounds that, following particularly rigorous control procedures, achieve positive outcomes in patients' quality of life.
The Framework Agreement will also ensure the stock of other essential pharmacological varieties for SERMAS hospitals. These include antihypertensives, ophthalmic medications, antiretrovirals for HIV treatment, immunomodulators for autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis or inflammatory bowel disease, oncological drugs, and anti-infectives, among others.
The administration of all these treatments to patients will be carried out in accordance with the clinical and pharmacological protocols established within the Madrilenian Health System.
This centralized purchasing procedure allows for better pricing based on purchase volume and reduces the bureaucratic burden on hospitals by simplifying management processes. Until now, most of these medications were purchased individually by each center.
