Madrid City Council has reached a preliminary agreement with Municipal Police unions to renew the collective bargaining agreement, ending a period of labor tensions and protests.

The announcement was made by the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, following the celebration of Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of the police force, held at El Retiro park this Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
The deal, described by the mayor as positive news, is currently provisional. Its final implementation is subject to approval through internal votes by union members, which are scheduled to take place over the coming weeks.

"It has been a complex negotiation, but it has been a negotiation in which both parties wanted to reach an agreement."

This understanding aims to resolve the conflict that led officers to decline participation in special security operations during recent events in the capital. During the event, discussions also touched upon the need to eliminate the replacement rate to increase staff numbers, a key demand that Madrid City Council continues to press before the Spanish Government.
