The Sala Verde at Teatros del Canal hosts from this Thursday a new interpretation of La dama boba, the renowned comedy written by Lope de Vega in 1613. The production, which will be staged until June 14, features an adaptation by Xus de la Cruz and direction by Josep Maria Mestres, forming part of the Comunidad de Madrid's commitment to the great classics of the Teatro Español.
This staging offers a fresh scenic approach to one of the masterpieces of the Spanish Golden Age. Through the characteristic humor and intricate plots of Lope de Vega, the play explores fundamental themes such as love, intelligence, and social prejudices, with a particular emphasis on the role of women in the society of the time.
Set in 16th-century Madrid, the action revolves around Finea, a young heiress whom everyone considers 'foolish'. Her personal transformation is triggered by love, in a plot woven with economic interests, jealousy, and social conventions that maintain dramatic tension from beginning to end.
“"'La Dama Boba' confronts us with a question that is both uncomfortable and fascinating: to what extent do we live within the role we have constructed for ourselves, and to what extent do we dare to step out of it."
Josep Maria Mestres explained that this version proposes a contemporary reading focused on identity and how each person assumes roles within society, highlighting the enduring relevance of the themes Lope de Vega raised over four centuries ago.
The cast includes Joaquín Notario, Carolina Rubio, Silvana Navas, and Carlos Serrano, accompanied by Pablo Béjar, Markos Marín, Concha Delgado, Víctor de la Fuente, and Alberto Granados, among other performers bringing the characters to life.
The artistic team is completed by Pepa Pedroche for verse mastery, original music by Alberto Granados, set design by Clara Notari, lighting by Juanjo Llorens, and costumes by Gabriela Salaverri, forming a comprehensive production that respects the essence of the text while updating it for contemporary audiences.
