In an internal analysis, the Izquierda Unida (IU) organization recognizes the need for a profound reflection on its purpose and relevance in the current political landscape. While its renewed presence and influence at the state level are positively assessed, in the city of Madrid, a disconnect from the collective imagination has been noted since 2019, the year IU lost representation in the City Council and District Boards.
The candidacy ‘La IU que merece Madrid’ (The IU Madrid Deserves), running in IU's city primaries, emphasizes that the organization has survived in recent years thanks to "the effort of its membership." These members, often working without sufficient coordination or a clear common project, are considered the "greatest asset" of IU Madrid Ciudad. Their knowledge of neighborhoods, neighborhood associations, and social movements is key to the party's future.
The main objective of this candidacy is to initiate a "new era" that strengthens IU's presence in Madrid. The aim is for an organization that is "stronger, more present, more organized, and more connected" with its membership and the reality of the neighborhoods. It is stressed that the primary process should not be a mere formality but the starting point for real transformation.
The proposal focuses on addressing the challenges of Madrid, a city where "living has become increasingly difficult," with issues of housing access, deteriorating public services, and rising living costs. IU aims to be a "living, close, and truly present organization," with "its feet on the street" and a distinct political project that prioritizes housing, public services, and the lives of working people.
An "participatory era, more connected to the real life of Madrid" is advocated, where membership is "an active part in thinking, deciding, and building." The candidacy also focuses on "unity within the transformative left" for 2027, seeking to build an alternative to the model of the Partido Popular and its mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida.
The challenge, according to the candidacy, is to "regain presence, initiative, enthusiasm, and militant pride" so that IU Madrid Ciudad can "return to its rightful place: in the neighborhoods, in the struggles, in the institutions, and in the imagination of those who want to transform Madrid." It seeks a left "with roots, with memory, with class, and with a horizon," capable of "exciting again, organizing again, and being part of the lives of its people."
