The operation, coordinated by the regional Firefighters Corps, focuses on pruning, clearing, and reviewing firebreaks in priority areas. These actions are carried out during periods of medium and low risk, especially in zones near populated areas or with dense vegetation, aiming to reduce combustible plant material and contain fire spread.
Preventative grazing is the predominant strategy, covering 71.2% of the area (3,772.59 hectares) through herds of sheep, goats, cows, and horses integrated into a regional program that collaborates with livestock farms since 2011.
Forestry crews directly intervene in 1,525 hectares of woodland, urban-forest interface zones, and firebreaks, performing clearing, pruning, and removal of vegetation debris. Concurrently, 74.6 kilometers of forest tracks are being improved to facilitate access for firefighting resources and enhance safety.
Currently, 304 professionals are involved in these preventative tasks using manual and heavy machinery. This number will increase to 419 personnel during the peak risk period, integrating into the INFOMA Plan (Civil Protection Plan against Forest Fires of the Comunidad de Madrid).
The activities are distributed across nearly fifty municipalities, covering six operational areas: Lozoya-Somosierra, Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, Central Zone, Southwest, Eastern Campiña, and Comarca de las Vegas. The intervention area may be adjusted based on weather conditions, the presence of protected species, or the actual vegetation density.
