The non-profit organization, founded by Airbnb, is collaborating with the Mensajeros de la Paz Association to provide shelter to those evacuated due to the national emergency declared by the Spanish Government, an unprecedented measure for a forest fire.
Christoph Gorder, Executive Director of Airbnb.org, emphasized the importance of ensuring a "comfortable and welcoming" place for families during difficult times. The program targets individuals whose primary residence is in areas under a mandatory evacuation order, who can request assistance by contacting the Mensajeros de la Paz Association directly.
The Mensajeros de la Paz Association works with local councils and authorities to identify affected families and guide them towards available accommodation solutions, including those offered by Airbnb.org.
The collaboration extends to the possibility of donating to Airbnb.org, with 100% of contributions funding emergency accommodations. Additionally, Airbnb hosts can offer discounted stays, with Airbnb donating the corresponding service fees to Airbnb.org and providing AirCover protection.
This emergency response program has been activated in Spain on previous occasions, such as after the DANA floods in the Valencian Community in the autumn of 2024, and for medical stays in collaboration with various social entities. It has also been used to support first responders after earthquakes in Venezuela.
