The gatherings, known as 'kedadas', were organized via social media with specific dates and times, drawing drivers from various autonomous communities. The usual locations were in the southern area of Madrid, such as Fuenlabrada, Pinto, Valdemoro, Coslada, or Madrid capital itself, although they also traveled to other provinces like Cuenca, Navarra, or Toledo. Participants showcased cars modified to enhance their technical capabilities.
The organizers, who were also active participants, employed security measures to hinder identification, such as using balaclavas and tampering with license plates. They had established protocols to evade Civil Guard apprehension if located. These activities not only involved offenses against road safety, like reckless driving and document forgery, but also severely endangered the physical integrity of other road users.
The investigation, initiated last summer by the Madrid Traffic Sector after detecting these illegal races on social media, has resulted in the arrest of 11 men aged between 18 and 25. They face charges including reckless driving, document forgery, simulation of a crime, serious disobedience to authority, and membership in a criminal organization. Additionally, four vehicles and materials such as flares and balaclavas were seized.
Penalties for these offenses vary significantly. Reckless driving can lead to 6 months to 5 years in prison and the revocation of driving privileges. Document forgery can result in up to 3 years in jail. Simulating a crime carries fines, while serious disobedience may lead to prison or a fine. Membership in a criminal organization is punishable by 1 to 8 years in prison, depending on the individual's role.
The Civil Guard reminds all road users of the importance of rejecting and not participating in illegal gatherings and races, or any activity that jeopardizes road safety and personal integrity. These behaviors pose a serious danger to both those who engage in them and other drivers.
Furthermore, the appeal is made for citizen collaboration, which is fundamental in preventing these types of crimes. Relevant information can be communicated through official Civil Guard channels, such as the 062 phone number and Alertcops, thus contributing to safer mobility and the protection of all users.
