The Torrejón de Ardoz City Council has released recommendations for residents to prevent the negative effects of heat and excessive sun exposure, particularly targeting the elderly, ill, and children under four. The aim is to raise awareness of health risks and provide guidance.
It is advised to avoid exercise and sun exposure during the hottest hours of the day, maintain good hydration, wear light clothing made of natural fibers in light colors, and use hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Staying in ventilated or air-conditioned spaces is also crucial.
Other practical tips include avoiding alcoholic or sugary drinks, consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables, and eating light meals to mitigate the effects of the heat. For any physical discomfort, residents are urged to visit their Health Center or call the emergency number 112.
For elderly individuals living alone, the importance of daily check-ins is emphasized. If they experience any discomfort or require further information on the harmful effects of heat, they should contact their Health Center or 112.
Specific guidelines include drinking sufficient fluids even without feeling thirsty, avoiding the sun between 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM, reducing physical activity and resting in the shade if undertaken, frequenting air-conditioned places, wearing head coverings, dressing in light and breathable clothing and footwear, keeping blinds lowered at home, avoiding alcohol, using sunscreen, and eating light meals that provide necessary water and minerals. Staying informed about air quality is also recommended.
