The municipality of Torrejón de Ardoz has finished air-conditioning all 899 classrooms in its public schools, a pioneering initiative that involved an investment of 7 million euros and uses solar energy.
The city of Torrejón de Ardoz has completed the installation of air conditioning systems in all of its 899 public education classrooms. The City Council executed this ambitious project between 2025 and 2026, allocating an investment of 7 million euros with the aim of improving study and work conditions for both students and teachers, especially in the face of high temperatures.
According to the City Council, this action positions Torrejón de Ardoz as the first city in Spain to achieve complete air conditioning coverage in all its public classrooms. The intervention has encompassed all 21 public schools in the town, including the Iker Casillas Special Education College.
A total of 1,669 low-consumption air conditioning units, capable of providing both cooling and heating, have been distributed in each center. The installation was carried out based on surface area criteria and the specific needs of each classroom, ensuring an optimal environment throughout the year.
A key aspect of this initiative is that the units operate with electricity generated by solar panels installed on the educational centers themselves. This approach allows the majority of the system to run on renewable energy, which not only enhances classroom comfort but also significantly reduces the energy impact of school buildings.
The integration of high-efficiency cooling and heating machines and low-noise compact units reduces the reliance on conventional boilers. Municipal data indicates that this measure will reduce gas dependency by over 930,000 kilowatt-hours of thermal energy and is estimated to prevent the emission of 689 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
The municipal government has emphasized that the project planning considered the particular needs of each school to minimize any disruption to classes. This initiative complements other measures implemented in previous terms to combat heat in school spaces, such as the installation of awnings in playgrounds and outdoor areas.
“
"The air conditioning of classrooms in all public schools in Torrejón de Ardoz began in 2025 and was completed in 2026. Our city is the only one in Spain to implement this pioneering measure to combat heat, as was already done by installing awnings in the previous term."
“
"It is an immense improvement to be working in optimal and favorable conditions thanks to the air conditioning."
