The socialist party argues that the local executive's acknowledgment of these difficulties demonstrates that the proposal, announced during the municipal election campaign in May 2023, lacked solid technical and financial backing. They believe that what was presented as an immediate solution to the parking problem in Alcalá de Henares has now been revealed as an unviable initiative.
The Executive “promised something it knew—or should have known—it could not fulfill,” which, in their opinion, affects political credibility and public trust.
The PSOE emphasizes the lack of prior planning, noting that no studies have been presented to support the economic or technical viability for the construction of these 5,000 underground parking spaces. In response, the Urban Planning Councilor, Cristina Alcañíz, has defended the municipal government's drive to expand parking in neighborhoods, mentioning projects currently under study or execution.
Socialists recall that the current mayor of Alcalá de Henares, Judith Piquet, announced the creation of thousands of spaces during the 2023 campaign, a proposal that, according to the PSOE, aimed to attract votes with "striking" figures without real technical support. They also contrast this situation with the management of the previous municipal government, which enabled over 2,200 free surface parking spaces and conducted feasibility studies for underground parking in various areas such as Gran Canal, Estación-Ferraz, and Colegio Zulema.
The Socialist Group also criticizes the municipal government's lack of initiatives to seek alternative solutions, such as public-private collaboration or new funding avenues. They demand public explanations regarding the basis of the electoral promise and what alternatives are now being considered to address the city's parking problem, urging for "serious and rigorous" management based on planning.
