The Paracuellos de Jarama City Council has organized a training session on April 22, aimed at residents over 60, to teach them how to use WhatsApp, social media, and video calls safely and effectively.

In an increasingly digital world, connecting with family and accessing information are crucial to preventing isolation. With this premise, the workshop ‘Connected with the World: Social Networks and Online Communication’ has been launched, an initiative designed for residents of Paracuellos de Jarama who are over 60. The goal is to provide them with the necessary skills so that technology becomes a useful and entertaining resource in their daily lives.
This training proposal is the result of collaboration between the local administration of Paracuellos de Jarama and the General Directorate for the Care of the Elderly and Dependency of the Community of Madrid. Both institutions seek to promote active aging, where technology acts as an integrating factor, allowing seniors to maintain a leading role in the social and community life of the municipality.
The workshop has been designed with a practical and accessible approach. It will include an introduction to popular platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, ideal for sharing family moments or following local news. Another essential module will focus on instant messaging, with special attention to applications like WhatsApp and Telegram, covering everything from sending audio and photos to managing groups. Additionally, the use of video calls with programs like Skype or Zoom will be addressed, facilitating long-distance communication.
Online security is a key concern, so part of the session will be dedicated to teaching participants how to identify suspicious messages, protect their personal data, and browse safely to avoid scams. The workshop will also explore the leisure and information possibilities offered by the internet, such as reading news, finding recipes, or participating in online cultural activities, encouraging attendees to find an entertainment space on social media tailored to their tastes.
The intensive session will take place on Wednesday, April 22, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Senior Center, located at Algete Street number 7. To participate, prior registration is essential at the Office for the Care of the Elderly, on the first floor of the same center, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
