April 23 marks one of Aragon's most significant festivities, San Jorge Day, which coincides with Book Day. This date commemorates the legend of Saint George and the dragon, symbolizing the eternal struggle between good and evil. It is a tradition for Aragonese people to exchange books and enjoy 'lanzón', a typical sweet made of sponge cake, cream, nougat, and egg yolk.
Although the main institutional events take place in Zaragoza, Huesca, and Teruel, including the presentation of the Aragon Awards and various cultural performances, the Aragonese community residing in other locations also joins the celebration. In Alcalá de Henares, the Casa de Aragón has organized a special program.
To anticipate the holiday, the Casa de Aragón de Alcalá de Henares has scheduled its San Jorge Festivities 2026 for this weekend, inviting all citizens to join this display of tradition and coexistence. Activities will begin on Saturday, April 18, at its headquarters on Alarpardo Street, in the Campo del Ángel neighborhood, and at other points in the city.
The program includes the Festival Proclamation on Saturday, April 18, at 12:00 PM in the Capuchinos Assembly Hall, led by Alberto López, Mª Belén Felices, and Matías Rubio. On the same day, at 2:30 PM, there will be a 'comida de alforja' (packed lunch) and card and PlayStation championships at the Casa de Aragón del Henares.
The celebrations will continue on Friday, April 24, with an Aragonese Jota Festival at 6:30 PM at the Paco de Lucía Auditorium, featuring participation from the Casas de Aragón of Alcalá de Henares, Tres Cantos, and Madrid. Finally, on Saturday, April 25, an Aragonese Mass will be held at 11:00 AM at the Parroquia de Santa María la Mayor.
