The city of Alcalá de Henares begins the 2026-2027 school year with the progressive incorporation of students to classrooms on September 7 and 8. In Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, Special Education, Compulsory Secondary Education, and Baccalaureate, 31,888 students return to the city's educational centers, approximately 1,000 more than the previous year.
One of the main novelties of the course is the expansion of centers offering 1st year of Compulsory Secondary Education. The schools Antonio Machado, Espartales, and Juan de Austria begin offering 1st ESO this year, joining centers Ernest Hemingway and Nuestra Señora del Val, which had already started this process last year. The objective is to offer families more schooling alternatives, allowing students to continue in the same center during the first cycle of Secondary Education.
The City Council has carried out or plans to carry out actions in 26 out of 36 municipal centers this course, intervening in over 70% of the facilities. Maintenance works and tasks focus mainly on roofs, bathrooms, courtyards, fencing, pavements, and accessibility, aiming to improve educational spaces and ensure adequate facilities. Given the age of many public schools (21 out of 28 are over 40 years old), continuous planning for works and building conservation is essential.
Among the notable actions is the intervention at the Pablo Picasso Special Education College, which included the renovation of four bathrooms, the replacement of flooring in four classrooms and the gymnasium, the renewal of a sports court, and the repair of grates, along with accessibility improvements.
Another novelty will be the relocation of the Municipal Adult School (EMA) to Zulema during the 2026-2027 academic year. This change aims to consolidate activities, currently spread across different locations, into a single space, facilitating educational organization, improving accessibility, and optimizing schedules and attention for both students and faculty of the Municipal Adult School.
