Driven by Renfe in collaboration with the City Council and the University of Alcalá de Henares, this cultural tourism proposal on Cercanías Madrid allows travelers to explore the Complutense city, declared a World Heritage Site.
The program will run every Saturday until June 27, totaling 12 days. During these trips, participants will get to know the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes through an experience that blends history, theater, and entertainment.
Tickets cost 22 euros, with a reduced fare of 16 euros for children between 7 and 11 years old. Children under 6 years old travel free. The service includes a round trip on a special non-stop Cercanías train, enlivened by actors portraying characters from Cervantes' works.
Once in Alcalá de Henares, travelers enjoy a guided tour of the city's main historical sites, accompanied by the same theatrical cast. The tour covers emblematic places such as Cervantes' birthplace, the church where he was baptized, the medieval city with its old Jewish, Christian, and Muslim quarters, and the Renaissance university city.
The itinerary also includes the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso and its Paraninfo, the annual venue for the Cervantes Prize, as well as Cervantes Square, Calle Mayor, the Magistral Cathedral, and the Archbishop's Palace, among other points of interest.
Created in 1997, the Cervantes Train is one of Renfe's longest-running themed trains. In its previous 28 editions, it has transported nearly 35,000 travelers, with 1,822 in the last season, surpassing the previous year's occupancy figures.
Trains typically depart from Madrid-Atocha Cercanías station at 10:36 AM, arriving in Alcalá at 11:15 AM. However, on April 25, May 2, and May 9, due to construction work, departures will be from Chamartín at 11:00 AM, arriving at 11:25 AM. The return from Alcalá de Henares is scheduled for 6:35 PM, arriving at Atocha at 7:14 PM. On the aforementioned dates, the train will depart at 6:40 PM and arrive at Chamartín at 7:05 PM.
