Colmenar Viejo is set to host the tenth edition of its Shepherding Days and an Artisanal Cheese Fair this weekend, events designed to highlight local livestock traditions and products through exhibitions, transhumance, and workshops for all ages.

The program for the Shepherding Days, now in its tenth year, aims to introduce the ancient craft of shepherding to residents and visitors, emphasizing its historical importance to the regional economy. Activities will take place across various locations in the municipality, providing a comprehensive look at this tradition.
On Friday, April 10, the Dehesa de Navalvillar will host a shepherding exhibition. At the reforestation quarter of Vallejo de la Hierba, demonstrations will feature Churra Colmenareña sheep, alongside both manual and machine shearing practices. This day will include participation from students of New York University in Madrid and members of social and environmental associations, focusing on educating the public about traditional techniques and their evolution.
One of the most anticipated events will be held on Saturday, April 11: the transhumance of a goat herd. The journey will begin at 10:00 AM from the entrance of the Dehesa de Navalvillar, in the San Pedro-La Mueda area, concluding at the Plaza de Toros around 12:30 PM. Once there, the animals will remain stabled for public viewing, recreating traditional livestock movements.
Concurrently, the esplanade of the Plaza de Toros will host the Artisanal Cheese Fair, open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. This event will gather about twenty producers from various autonomous communities, including Madrid, Cantabria, Extremadura, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, and Castilla y León, offering a wide selection of dairy products.
The fair will also feature activities for all ages, such as traditional wooden games and creative wool workshops, scheduled in two time slots: from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. At 1:00 PM, there will be a free tasting of shepherd's migas, and a DJ will provide musical entertainment at the esplanade's bandstand.
Organizers emphasize that these events aim to revive and disseminate an activity that was central to daily life in Colmenar Viejo for decades. The combination of exhibitions, gastronomy, and family-friendly proposals makes this event a focal point for the municipality's livestock culture and artisanal products.
